Protection against charger-based hacks in iOS 7 Apple devices





Apple has announced the newest iOS 7 beta release that includes security update to protect the mobile devices from hackers by using modified phone charger or battery. The readily available circuit board can mask as a docking station or battery can be used to exploit weakness in Apple’s mobile security. The researches notified that malicious charger was built with limited amount of time and budget. These chargers injects with arbitrary software that cannot be safeguarded by jailbroken device even. The only solution after its infection remains is to perform factory setting or recover though iOS device recovery softwares. 


At the Black Hat conference researchers used their proof-of-concept modified the charger to infect the iPhone with the virus, causing it call the team members of smartphone. As the current generation Apple device runs on latest operating system software the cyber criminals tends to practice malicious tasks tends to steal the sensitive data or for taking up the control over the device remotely.  But this vulnerability does not affect the Android devices because the Google’s mobile operating system warns the device when it is plugged into a computer. 


The Apple’s fix is available in latest iOS 7 beta release in form of a notification to warn the user from connecting the device to standard charger. This application is included in iOS 7 which is going to release in this autumn. The company also offered rewards to those who will repot bugs to discourage the selling of their discoveries in open market. Microsoft also said that its new bug bounty schemes is aimed at helping to improve the resilience of its products through responsible disclosure of flaws that could exploit.
